mac facecharts

i won't go into explaining what a facechart is because i know everyone that is reading my blog right now has been to the mac counter. it's one of my favorite things to do besides a makeover to make the day go by. it's also one of my bigger responsibilities at the counter since i'm the facechart specialist. my job is basically to make sure that our facechart book looks fabulous @ all times. also to give my fellow girls guidance, tips & tricks when needed. one of these days, i'd like to make a small how-to video. i think it would be really helpful for my counter.

here are some samples of my work.

i try to really focus on making each and every single one different. i was told a while back that the artist tend to create facecharts that'll resemble them in some way or another. i've noticed & have been told in mine that it would be the brows. the overall shape is very similar to my own. other than 2 of the lip looks, i've had all of the looks on my own face at one time displayed here in my facecharts.

on saturday, there was an animal print theme for the entire cosmetics department... including mac.

fun in the sun

i can't believe i totally abandoned this blog for about a year. (i think) writing makeup entries really take a lot of my time and since i've stopped doing the office thing, i couldn't keep up. (oh and then, there was my wedding too)

i've been with mac for over over a year now. still loving what i do. i'm kinda in a reflecting mood today. i'm grateful to be doing what i love most. makeup. i've learned so much in over a year and a half at my job. i have great coworkers. we're really like a family. we teach and learn from each other. just when you think you've learned and know everything possible there is to makeup... there's always something new.

aside from the nasty, humid weather we had today... it's really starting to warm up these days. i thought i'd post about some must-have products for the summer.

those that know me personally know i'm not a huge fan of the sun. when my girls tell me that they're going tanning, i give them the whole speech on how bad the sun is for you and your skin especially. when you see customers that come to you who have abused themselves by laying out in the sun in their past, you'll think twice about getting toasted on the beach or a tanning bed. if you want to age gracefully and not look like magda (wrinkly grams from the movie, "something about mary") you'll stay out of the sun and opt for self-tanners.

my top recommendations for self-tanners:

i'm usually pretty pale all year round. i tried it and fell in love. by far the BEST self tanners out there. it does have a scent but the color you get is pretty worth it. i went from a mac NC25 to a NC40. that's almost 2 shades deeper from my natural skin tone. the consistency of this product is almost like water. it is not your usual self-tanning cream/lotion, gel or spray. you see a self-tanner that is like water, you immediately think... messy. that's what i thought and i freaked out a little as to what the hell am i getting myself into. it is far from messy.

how to: the self-tanner is a dark, chocolate brown so you can see your application. i highly recommend using a cotton ball and gently soaking it. be careful not to get it on your fingertips because it will stain if you don't wash your hands immediately. it is by far the easiest self-tanner. it dries almost instantly so you don't have to worry about it staining your clothes or bed sheets.

the results: beautifully bronzed. not orange but a nice golden brown like you've been in the sun for a week. i do recommend doing it before you go to bed because the color you see after the product dries is not the color you'll be. when you wake up in the morning, you will be significantly deeper than what you remember seeing.

an instant bronzer. it comes in 4 colors: medium, medium-dark, dark and deep dark. it is a limited edition but love, LOVE the product. this too is tinted so you can see where the product is going. the best way i can describe this product's consistency is that it's like a mousse bronzer in spray form.

how to:

if you can spend a little, applying the product with the body buffer will prevent the curse of the burnt palms. totally worth it! you work the product in in circular motions. (this technique helps with the overall blood circulation) you bronze and give yourself a mini massage all at the same time. a nice way to unwind and look totally fab all at the same time.
** the product blends easily so if you want to save a few bucks, you can use your hands to spread.
just wash your hands thoroughly in between applications.**

results: transform instantly from being pale during the day to gorgeously bronzed for night. this product is more like a self tinted makeup for the body so you don't have to worry about that metallic self-tanner smell. it dries quickly too. evenly massage over the skin, wait a few minutes, put your clothes on (if you decide to go "mystic", haha) and go. it will last through about 3~4 showers. the color is great and has a great shimmer to it so it really just gives your skin a healthy, golden glow.

if you are looking for a self-tanner for the body that'll last a little longer, try this one. this product lasts 5~7 days. it's a lotion that is a dark chocolate color that you can see when applying. you will know you will get a great brown color because you will see green run from your hands when you are washing them. anyone that knows color theory will know what i'm talking about but trust me on this one. AMAZING product for the body. great for sensitive skin. it won't clog your pores or irritate the skin. in fact, your skin will feel incredibly soft to the touch afterwards. you do have to wait about a good hour before you do anything and the color will deepen in about three hours so again, i suggest this is something you do before you go to bed.

these are the three products i mix & match together. i am the same color & bronze all over.

1. clarins for the face, neck and decollete.

2. sun labs ultra dark self tanning lotion for all over the body.

3. mac sundressing in dark when the self-tanning lotion starts to fade and i want an instant pick me-up.

girlie poll/feedback

i can't believe how long it's been since my last update. so sorry guys. these days, if it's not work, i'm busy with getting back to my emails. i've got a question for all of you girlies.... now being a part of mac and reading some responses from my other xanga...

i'd like to know from a customer's point of view.

what is your experience like when you visit a mac counter?

i know it's usually crazy and most ppl end up feeling completely ignored. i know i did bc sometimes i felt the artists had this i'm too diva for you attitude to even say "hi~ how are you?" i want to know what i can do to make the shopping experience for the customers better...

also,

do you find the makeup we have intimidating and make you not want to give you a makeup application?

the only reasoning i have on my part, it's a part of my job to be "made-up" dramatically. wearing nothing but black, we've got only our faces & personalities to advertise. it's all about creative expression.

feedback will be very much appreciated. and if you have questions or would like to comment on anything else... please feel free. i know i've got some major updates to do on requests of all sorts.. i promise i will get to them eventually.

i apologize for the lack in updates. i put a lot of time for just one entry and it's been so crazy these days. some kind of forum format on xanga would be nice...either way, i'm going to start writing little by little to get an entry up soon.

over the weekend, i gave my 2 girls, julia and ginger a makeover. a dramatic, sexy look for julia and a possible bridesmaid look for ginger. i'll be leaving the bridesmaid look a secret bc the bride is a xangan.

booly blush trick

1. i always dust a light coat of transparent or loose powder before your powder blush. a light coat of powder is a must for powder anything. powder blush on bare skin gives you splotchy!

(skip step #1 if you are going to be using gel/liquid blush)

2. i lightly tap my powder brush into matte white powder and apply right beneath the eye area and across the cheekbones. this is to slightly brighten the area and allow the blush color to be more pure.

3. i use blush in two parts. first, use a very sheer light colored powder blush like benefit's dandelion or georgia and sweep across cheek 2 fingers width (closed) below the eye. before you sweep make sure to blow off or pack in excess powder on top of the brush by tapping brush end to the palm of your hand. the color should be barely there.

4. pick another sheer blush with a bit more color. my favorites are from nars, mac, georgio armani & tarte. get some on your brush, blow excess or pack in powder again. find the point on your face where the width is 1~2 closed fingers below the eye and where the outer area of your pupil ends. gently tap brush at that very point, blend with your brush across, up and downwards.

(step #4 you can replace powder with a cream/mousse type blush)

5. on special occasions, i'll take a sheer, shimmer powder in light gold or pink and highlight in a small sideways "v" shape around the temple and cheekbone. if i don't have any around, i'll substitute with one of my frost mac shadows like jest, ricepaper, sunday's best.

notice the purple dotted lines on the side of my cheek. (sorry, not the greatest pic to use) kinda looks like the sideways "v" right? that is where you'll be applying the shimmer. it'll give you an overall glow like this:

the prom makeover i gave my cousin (homecoming queen) last year. her face is glowing and blush is not overly done yet there's a slight touch of color.

6. i take my bronzer (mac sheer pressed powder in NC45) swirl my brush around, blow/pack in powder and apply in the area right beneath the cheekbones. you can locate it best when you have your cheeks sucked in.

7. last, i go over the entire face with transparent powder with a big powder brush and a spray with dream mist to set everything from matte to dewy.

keep in mind:

have an all natural hair blush brush to pick and deposit jut the "right" amount. remember... FEEL for your brushes~
less is always better than too much. don't try to achieve a blushed look in one stroke. layers are always better.
instead of circular, buffing type action with blush, try half circular motion.
if you brushed sideways or upwards, always remember to go over one last time in small and light downward sweep to lay the tiny/invisible hairs on your face flat.

makeup crimes. we've all been guilty of committing them. some of us still do~ in this day and age, we can't have just the fashion police... we need makeup police as well.

foundation that's visibly a completely different color from the neck.
brows: mismatched color, too dark, in NEED of grooming, etc.

AND #1 most visible and most unforgivable "crime"

BAD BLUSH- too much, streaky, splotchy, wrong color. blush is the one thing that separates another from saying phrases like,

"is she looking to replace one of the clowns in the circus? "

"that girl looks like she has waaaaaay too much makeup on."

"did she apply blush while a blind man was driving?"

etc.

some prime examples of BAD blush:

no~! AND no~!
i think it should be understood that blush is to add slight NOT splash of color.
also, blush should not be used to contour the face.
that is something you can do with your bronzer & highlighters.

types:

powder- works with all skin types, best for oily skin.

use: a blush brush (small or medium sized to fit the apple of your cheeks) made with 100% natural hairs. the natural hairs compared with other kinds have a tendency to pick up just the right amount of powder (even if you've got a heavy hand) allowing you to apply in small amounts.

brush buying tip*: the high end brands and art supply stores (i.e pearl ) are most likely to have better quality brushes but that is not always the case. always feel out the brushes. make sure they don't shed and you've got to absolutely LOOOOOOOVE the way the brush feels against your skin.

cream/mousse & gel- leaves a dewy like finish, best for dry skin & small pores. works well on bare skin or those that wear foundation. if using gel, apply in the same way but dust powder on top afterwards.

use: sponge or fingers to work into skin.

liquid- "stain" of color for the skin. great for all types.

use: applied in the same way as cream/mousse and gel but will have to be blended in quicker because it'll dry quickly. otherwise you'll be left with streaks! EEK!
